Asian Feng Shui

Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing the human existence with the surrounding environment. The term feng shui literally translates as "wind-water" in English. Feng Shui is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, classified as Physiognomy (observation of appearances through formulas and calculations). The Feng Shui practice discusses architecture in metaphoric terms of "invisible forces" that bind the Universe, Earth, and man together, known as qi/chi/energy.

Pachira is a genus of tropical trees distributed in Central and South America, Africa and India. They form small or large trees with digitate leaves, and the fruit an oval woody one-celled capsule opening by a number of divisions and containing many seeds.

It is beloved by people with its evergreen leaves and the braided body shape. Because the body looks just like "8" which is pronounced as "Getting Rich" in Chinese, makes Pachira to be known as "Money Tree".

It is sometimes known by the trivial names "ZZ plant", "aroid palm", "fat boy", and "eternity plant". According to Feng Shui theory, plant represents "steady" and "growing". People normally like to place one or two kinds of plants in the office or home and wish for good fortune.

The ZZ plant (Fortune Tree) is thought to bring good fortune and luck with its significant thick, textured leaves. As the ZZ plant grows, the leaf will sprout and unfold into a symmetrical feather-like stem.

Lucky bamboo is believed to be an ideal example of the thriving wood and water element, with the addition of a red ribbon sometimes tied around the stalks which is believed to "fire" the positive flow of energy or chi in the room. The number of stalks also has meaning: three for happiness; five for wealth; six for health. (Four stalks are avoided since the word 'four' in Chinese sounds too similar to the word for 'death'.) Keeping lucky bamboo inside house and business places is believed to bring happiness and prosperity.
